Portfolio Projects - Frequently Asked Questions.

Our portfolio shows some of the different types of garden buildings we have worked on in recent times. This FAQ answers some of the more common questions we were asked when talking to customers about their building projects.

Is it going to be cold in the winter?

Our founder is a trained Passivhaus builder and has been involved in constructing homes with some of the highest levels of thermal efficiency anywhere in the country. Put simply, it will likely be warmer than your house in the winter.

But are you licensed builders or just cowboys?

I challenge you to find another garden room company that is run by a Chartered Builder. What’s more, we only employ qualified tradesmen who know what they’re doing. Conker Construction was founded to create high-quality buildings and create an enjoyable workplace for us all in the process, so we’ve carefully selected a friendly bunch who have a passion for creating your building. We’re also members of the Federation of Master Builders and the Green Register. No cowboys here.

Will a Conker Garden Building add value to your home?

Absolutely! It will almost definitely be the best investment you could make into your property. It is more cost-effective than a loft conversion or traditional extension and creates a detached space. Conker garden buildings are built to the highest standards so will always be viewed by a purchaser as a real asset. Rightmove reports that 57% of people in January 2021 were enquiring about separate places to work from home but only one in 660 homes are being sold with such a space. So you do the maths!

So, what are your construction methods?

We are big advocates of timber frame, combining traditional construction techniques with modern technology. Timber frame enables us to build from locally bought, sustainably sourced materials and we never use any nasties like concrete to create a truly sustainable building, both in use and embodied energy. Our timber frames are built to Passivhaus principles of thermal efficiency and airtightness – unlike any other garden room builders we’ve found. However, we can also renovate existing outbuildings for you.

What makes Conker Construction different from national online suppliers?

There are countless suppliers of garden rooms online which will supply you an off-the-shelf model which has already been designed. These can be OK if you’re looking for something generic or aren’t planning on using the space very often. But why would you not want to customise the space to your needs rather than the other way round? The online versions are often made in factories with a lot of the cost attributed to company overheads, meaning they use lower-quality materials and definitely can’t provide the same level of customisation or aftercare. When you commission a Conker garden building, those same costs are going towards paying for the time to be spent on the bespoke design of your building (not to rent on a factory).

Can you convert existing outbuildings?

Yes, we can. We can apply our past experience of domestic renovations to create reimagined spaces whether they be outbuildings, garages, workshops or just small garden features.
